This is so lame. Posting like 5 minutes after my previous post?

I just stared at my clock till it turned from 11:59 to 12:00. Then I heard my neighbours cheer and now fireworks keep going in the distance (I can hear them not see them). Ah well, now that I've welcomed the new year listening to 方大同 I can go to sleep and hope to wake up with full hp.

I was going to write that 2010 was a pretty boring blah year but then I realised that it was rather eventful. Despite time passing so quickly, the beginning of the year somehow seems so distant in memory, longer than a year anyway. I'm not going to spend much longer reflecting on 2010 because it's now 11.40pm. I had a good dinner with the family. Good food and red wine that I actually liked wow. Anyway, alcohol really puts me to sleep. I have finally found my long sought-after cure to insomnia.

2011 has surreptitiously crept up on me. I swear, it seemed so far away and now it's grabbing me by the neck and trying to shake me back into reality. A lot of big change to handle but I'll write about that another time.

Isn't it unfortunate that I spent the last day of 2010 being a mute? And I'm probably going to spend the first day of 2011 mute too.

Today I went out with a lobster, a semi-cooked whale, an oyster boy and my jaundiced boyfriend, always the recipe for amusement. My jaundiced boyfriend gave me the most marvelous mixtape ever you are awesome and amazing.

Acting Christmas elf for my family. Been spending most of my time at home wrapping presents. Urgh. Also had to help my mum buy presents, which was a bit of a headache. Still wrapping presents now. Gosh. Got many more to go.

I spent a lot of today feeling thankful for the people around me still being around me.

Narniaaaaa! Quite heart warming as usual but somehow missing the oomph of the previous movie. It was way eerie too though, especially with all the deatheater fog. If I was a kid I would probably have had nightmares for a week. foty and twin said that it was really different from the books. Kind of glad I haven't read them (not that I'd remember much even if I did). I loved Eustace's lines. So tart, so English. Found myself rolling my eyes at some of Aslan's lines, mainly because the references were totally unsubtle (and I'm so totally unreligious). Ben Barnes is still as good-looking as ever, possibly better.

I was wrapping christmas presents just now and I left the pricetags on 2 bloody hell. I realised (amazingly, thank goodness) and had to unwrap and rewrap them. It happened the other day as well with ALL the presents I wrapped -.- This is how you spell LOSER.

Speaking of Christmas gifts, my mum got me BOTH a coach wallet and bag for my birthday/christmas gift. Kind of shocked. She's becoming increasingly generous with her budget and it makes me feel quite shitty cos I spend a lot of her money on a regular basis anyway and I don't need her to buy me stuff like this :( I'd be happy even if she bought me cupcake tins or cookie sheets (which I would like too hoho). I told my mum that it was a rather large sum for a present and she said that altogether it's slightly more ex than my sister's christmas present and mine's birthday/christmas so it's okay. I suppose she was trying to be fair. urghurgh when I landed I actually told her I don't need a christmas present and the zara jacket could be my birthday present. I need to finish studying quickly and make lots of money and give my mum big birthday angpaos every year. After I get married (that's a total 'if') I will give her big cny angpaos too.

I need to relish these last 9 days I have of being 17 because I'll never be 17 again (no zefron reference intended). Youth is slipping away like a raging river.

Okay all that was just approximate recollection but you get the gist. Mum is quite amusing. And at the same time, doesn't that just make so much sense? (the latter anyway)

Brunch with my masked pasar malam friends. Today's yakun teh c was disappointing :( We were all so stoned and itchy bitchy and amazed by cheap stuff. OH YAH LOVES I MADE IT IN TIME TO THE COOKING CLASS YAY

Cue the fanfare, I finally finished reading my book! I think this is better than High Fidelity (the last Horby I read), maybe just because the context is more recent. Next read: How to be Good (so that I can say I've read all his novels. yea man cos I'm a loser like that).

I've also been meaning to read Infinite Jest. Perhaps I should start on that first. I'll go hunt it down in Melbourne.

Just took my first batch of blueberry polenta cupcakes out of the oven! Can't wait to try them after they cool! Last night I made mince for the mince pies for my family Christmas gathering and tried it this morning after adding the brandy and it was awesomeeee. Brandy is good. As you can see, I've been spending a lot of my free time making myself and the people around me grow fat.

Oh yah yesterday when I went to "run" I saw a really pretty tortoise shell cat! AND ALL THAT I COULD THINK ABOUT WAS FRIGGIN' XIST LOCUS AND INACTIVATION.

Today was an awesome omnomnom day! I had pig intestines, tofu, oyster omelette (didn't eat the oyster though) and sambal sweet potato leaves for lunch. Sam lou hor fun for dinner. yummms. I also made honey granola cupcakes! I stacked them too early though so they are kind of flat :( more scone-ish than cupcake-ish. They taste good though! AND HEALTHY. GOT LOW-FAT YOGURT BROWN SUGAR AND GRANOLA INSIDE!

Running this morning was so fail. I strolled to the canal then ran something like 10m before I started strolling again. At random points of my stroll I attempted picking up the pace again but these sporadic bursts were extremely short-lived. All in all, my fitness level is approximately zero.

Apart from fitness fail, skin fail. Forever fail no matter what I do. Life is unfair.

Also, Chinese fail. At dinner, I said 四季豆 but the waitress heard 狮子头. Imagine my (and my dad's) surprise when a bowl of meatballs was brought to the table. Granted, the waitress was an elderly shanghainese with heavily accented mandarin. But still, how shameful.

yea man I'm always somewhat bemused and amused when people are so incredibly impressed by asians speaking english. I remember last year this tourist asked me for directions to lygon and looked so flabbergasted when I responded haha.

Anyway, I'm really bored and my first download of glee was some crap file so I have to re-download it and thus I am passing time by rewatching super old community channel vids. I also watched some shane dawson, michelle phan and kevjumba. Oh and a bit of move media but they kind of bored me to death.

Last night on my way back, when I got of the train at clementi, I suddenly felt kind of sad (lennon's ns heaviness spreading). I'm really going to miss my neighbourhood after spending the past 9 years of my life living here, well sort of, anyway. Coming back to visit is never really the same as living in the place. Kind of hard to believe that my parents are really going to move to London. Holiday plans are probably going to be pretty screwed up after that, but it's okay, I'll work through it. My mum's pretty hyped up about being able to go to the US and europe more easily so I will probably be visiting places other than CHINA for family vacations. Not bad having 3 homes.

I just got my passport photo taken for my exchange form and I look like a druggie cos the rings under my eyes are incredibly dark. My fringe was also incredibly messy because the wind mussed it up on my way there and the toilet was closed so I couldn't do any damage control. How unfortunate. But never mind, I've long accepted the fact that I will never take a nice passport photo.

One of the most offensive things in the world, I find, is when people insult my music. For instance, when people ask in a meaningful tone, "why do you listen to this?". I understand when people say "not my kind of music" or "I prefer something else" but there's no need to go anywhere beyond that. If I've learnt anything at all from my music psychology and music & health lectures, it's that the music we choose reflects some aspect of ourselves, so technically insinuating something about someone's taste in music would be implying that about them too. NOT COOL.

Okay I haven't blogged in a long time and though there's been lots I've been meaning to talk about I just can't seem to remember it now. Ah well.

My answers for the assignment are really weird so I'm pretty sure they're wrong, which means I need to go meet someone I don't want to meet to get help gosh. And seriously, differential equations, in particular mixing problems, are the bane of my existence. I have decided that if possible, I'm not going to take anymore math subjects.

I ate SO much yesterday. When we sat down to eat dinner, it was only 4+ and we finished before 6pm. I haven't had such an early dinner.. EVER. I had hot pot bul go gi which was to die for! I realise that everytime I like an artiste/band, I obsess over them, though my obsession is really shortlived (pretty much reflects my attention span). SNACKING MUST STOP

I just ate 1/3 of my cadbury pastilles and 3/5 of my ritz crackers. This is after having twix for breakfast (freaking unhealthy I'm so disgusted by myself) and one slice of kaya bread and two slices of tuna bread and one piece of dying lettuce for lunch. And I think I'm going to eat duck rice for dinner (Y).

OH yesterday. Psych tutorial yesterday - stand on the street corner and point at the sky and see how many people look up too. Okay well that makes it sound very un-scientific but the way we did it was rather un-scientific anyway. There we were, 10 retards standing outside lygon court pointing at some random part of the sky for one minute with 2 other people attempting to be inconspicuous nearby whilst recording the number of people who stopped or looked up.

I set my alarm for 8.40 this morning cos I needed to go print lecture notes before bio. Left the house at 9.40, reached erc at 9.45 (it's awesome living across the road from campus). Then I was using the com and when I checked the time and OH SHIT IT'S 5 MINUTES TILL 10AM. So quickly printed my notes and hurried off to Copland. When I walked in, I was wondering where Dawn Gleeson was cos some specs dude that I've never seen before was standing at the front of the theatre. And he began his lecture, "Ladies and Gents! So we had a great lecture on Wednesday... ... How drugs are derived from modern chemicals." It was only then it hit me OH SNAP BIO'S AT 11AM.

Damn silly. I don't know what on earth was going on in my head that whole time. Bio lectures have always been at 11am, even last sem.

Anyway, I'm tempted to buy the shit list tabs. Naiseee.

On a completely random note, it's funny how catty and bitchy mean the same thing. Like fat chance and slim chance. mm yea irony.

SO now it's 10.47 and I should leave soon for my bio lecture for real.

I'm only halfway through the second week of sem 2 but it feels like I've been here for a month! The best thing is that I'm already falling behind in terms of homework. Yea man, I didn't do my calc homework problems and suddenly I find that I'm two pages behind. Deceptively little, but trust me, it's not.

I actually used my postits today! They have been thoroughly neglected for a long time and though their purposes served now are far more mundane, I'm sure they still appreciate being used at all.

Hrm hrm there are 3 other trinity people in my psych tute. I really didn't see that coming.

Inception

I FINALLY watched Inception yesterday. It was good, yes, but not as mind-blowing or evocative as I thought it would be? It was sooooo totally like Simon's lectures from last sem. He spent one lecture explaining how we'll never really know if what we perceive is real because all we're ever going to experience is our own reality, which may not be real, then he finished off by telling us not to think too hard about it or the floor might crumble from under us. I'm pretty sure he'd love the film.

Anyway, after taking psychology, I've been spending way too much time pondering the reality of my reality and various other things. I'm particularly distressed that whenever someone mentions a colour, I start thinking non-stop about how words describing colour are so arbitrary and we'll never really know if you and I see red the same way. Maybe if you were in my head, the particular wavelength of light that you call "red" is perceived by me as what you call "purple" because "red" is just a label. And then, this train of thought leads me on to how language in general is arbitrary and how amazing it is that we can understand any words at all because to explain words, we use other words. And the train doesn't stop there! It just keeps chugging on steadily deeper into the tangles of the unknown unless I intentionally stop thinking about it. URGH life is all academia now.

SO after Inception and dinner and bridge and 3-people bridge and a really long reminisce about school days, I got back to my place at 6am. Roomie and I wanted to stay up for the sunrise and see the hot air balloons so we played 2-people bridge until the sky started getting bright. But then we realised that there was too much cloud cover to see anything much then went to sleep at about 7 15am. And now it's 2am! I'm going to crash soon srsly. Good night.

The World in Six Songs

Hurrah I've started reading my prescribed text for Music & Health. And I've gotten up to page 7 WOW. I stopped something like 10 times trying to get there. GOSH I'M SO ADD. It's by Daniel Levitin too which is quite cool since I've actually heard of him and read his other book (though I didn't finish it because I left it in Singapore for my dad. I think I left 1 and a half chapters unread). It's actually really interesting, but I really have issues with reading books.

Omg and I'm so smart. I walked into a freaking physics for biomed lecture today thinking it was my calc 2 lecture and sat down. Can't blame me though! My previous two calc lectures were there and it's really easy to misread Redmond Barry as Richard Berry okay. Not to mention ALL of my classes apart from psych and bio lectures are held at either Berry or Barry. By the end of my 4th year, I'll be really sick of Redmond Barry cos the entire psych department is housed in floors 7-12 or smth like that.

the second day

I'm feeling more homesick than usual, which is strange, considering it should be decreasing with every semester spent here. Okay, maybe not exactly homesickness, more like emptiness I guess?I feel three quarters full. But that one quarter that's empty, is helluva lot of empty (yea man, true blue pessimists don't need halves to prove anything). No worries though, I'm sure once I'm further into the term, my empty will be full of scrawling lecture notes and calculus assignments.

Can't wait till foty comes (: soon soon soon omg!

Oh yea did I tell you that we'll be dissecting squids during bio prac this sem? It totally reminds me of home ec, and then I remember Mrs Fern calling Nicole Ng a donkey and I have to stop myself from lol-ing lest people think I'm mentally unwell.

Oh oh and I was regaling roomie with tales of SC chem prac. When the slice of sodium Mrs Yogee put into water spontaneously combusted with a BOOF and smoked up the lab, and then the time Beng Hwee broke a conical flask. HAHA. SIGH I really do miss school sometimes.

And I miss AWC and my twin and woohoo (WHOSE BIRTHDAY IS TODAY BECUASE IT'S NOW 12:12AM MELBOURNE TIME HAPPY BIRTHDAY SARAH) and all sorts of other people who don't really read this space or do actually but leave no trace so I shan't list.

The Crazies with foty.It was pretty good but inevitably somewhat predictable. Omg the sound of a bloody pitch fork being dragged on the floor is totally chilling. I think foty and I swore a lot throughout the whole movie haha. Thank goodness the theatre only had 4 other people in it, all of whom were sitting alone and not in the centre (so strange no?).

foty and I agree that it wasn't too freaky because it wasn't ghosts. I think I only really freak out when it's ghostly/paranormal can't-be-explained-by-science stuff. Like the time my dad and sis were watching the ring in the living room, I happened to walk past at the part where sadako freaked out a sleeping person whom she was floating above and then I walked past again when she was climbing out of the tv. x10 freaky? I couldn't sleep that night. I'M A WIMP.

I went to Gattopardo for dinner. Mmmm cheese and parma ham and melon and lobster pasta and suckling pig pizza and chocolate sorbet.

HELL YEAH I LOST HALF A KILO HAHAH. I DON'T KNOW WHERE IT WENT BUT I DON'T WANT TO FIND IT.

Okay so a bit about china now. Expo! Of all the pavilions I saw, I liked the Spanish one the most. It featured Nadal HAHA (but that's just a btw thing. they had really innovative film displays). The Singapore one, unfortunately, was immensely boring. I swear, it's embarrassing to acknowledge being Singaporean after seeing it.

Let's examine the flaws shall we?
a) The facade
It was grey and round with weird shafts sticking out of it. My sis said it looked like giant sim cards. The pavilion guide said that the pavilion was supposed to look like a music box and the shafts were the little metal thingies that make the sound. I have to say, my sister's description seemed more apt. Apart from failing to be please aesthetically, I don't think a music box particularly represents Singapore.

b) The inside
So little effort seemed to be put into it. On the second floor of the pavilion, they put up these really plain tiny signs which stated Singapore's GDP and proportion of nitrogen in the air over the years. SC open house looked so good compared to that. And they had these strange small projections on the ground of things like the merlion and whatever, but they were too small for anyone to see clearly so it was just really ugly and dumb.

c) The propaganda
One entire section of the first floor of the pavilion was dedicated to DBS.
Oh and the best thing was the 8 minute video of mm talking about how Singapore is "The City from the Sky" because of our water shortage and blah blah rain blah blah singapore river blah blah clarke quay blah blah people urinated in lifts blah blah world class citizens blah blah. Seriously, this is not going to impress ANYONE. AT ALL. EVER. NO WAY.

The only thing nice at the Singapore pavilion was the roof garden. But even that wasn't enough to redeem the rest of it.

I saw the Iran pavilion, a bit of the African pavilion and also the Italian one. Obviously Italy was impressive with all their fashion showcases (all the armani, versace, prada) and the vespas and ferraris and they had a wall of pasta! There was pasta shaped like lions and elephants and turtles and there was pasta shaped like trains and cars and boats. Too cute too cute.

Okay now I must tell you about the most retarded thing ever. I stayed at some posh posh hotel on my last night in shanghai. 6 stars apparently but cos my dad had a discount, we were paying less than half the rack rate. So while my dad was checking my family in, I went to the toilet in the lobby. As I walked towards the cubicle, the toilet lid suddenly flung open energetically and lit up with a kind of eerie glow. I got such a shock I screamed and ran out of the cubicle. My sis just gave me the "why are you screaming haven't you seen this kind of toilet before" look. Anyway, yarh so I'm a country bumpkin who hasn't seen expensive toilets before.

Then when we got to the hotel room, I went to wash my feet. There were two shower heads, one movable one and one fixed to the ceiling. I didn't realise that the same knob controlled BOTH the shower heads. So when I was turning off the water to the movable one, I turned it a little too far the other way and the fixed shower head soaked my entire back with icy cold water. Yes, evidently I do not belong in posh places that use posh bathroom fixtures.

I finally watched toy story 3! Though I missed the first 10 minutes or so because of inefficient crowd control at cine. It was awesome. I love El Buzzo.

Gosh, the amount chemicals I'm pumping my body with. When I was about to take my antibiotics after dinner, I was thoroughly amused by the pill because it had "STD" on it. Okay yea anyway, cheap thrills.

Dinner with the cousins at Basilico! Everyone got the set menu thingy, which was a main course and a buffet for appetizers and desserts. Appetizers were good but nothing special, I tried not to eat so much so that I would have space for dessert. I got lamb chops for my main. The roasted potatoes that came with it were HEAVEN. mmmm. The lamb really tender but a bit too salty, which was disappointing. DESSERT. omg the chocolate shooters were the highlight of the meal srsly. It's like eating molten dark chocolate. oh yea oh yea and the espresso ice cream.

I cut my hair! On my way back home from the hairdresser's I got a phonecall from oysterboy asking if I could meet him at orchard like NOW. The weather made me decide against it. Instead, I ended having a 3 hour phone call with oyster boy while he wandered around orchard alone because he had a nice outfit on and thus refused to go home. Gosh my cordless handset ran out of battery a couple of times during the call HAHA.

We'll be renting out this house and prolly renting a place at dairy farm (AGAIN IKR). I'm going to miss this place! I really like this neighbourhood a lot. It's so pleasant. But what to do. Either way I'll be spending most of my time in Melbourne so it doesn't make much of a difference. Maybe I'll go do postgrad in the uk. AH WELL It's a long way away
